Wale - Freedom of Speech

DJBooth_logo2x
  • Artist: Wale
  • Track: Freedom of Speech
  • Producer: No Credit
  • Album: Florian

For artists who, like Wale, have modified their subject matter to adapt to the major-label hustle, mixtapes provide a valuable opportunity to exercise true Freedom of Speech. Fresh off lending his guest bars toMMG labelmate Omarion's M.I.A., the D.C. rhymesayer does just that on the latest song release off his next street album. Confusingly-named beatsmith No Credit mans the boards on this reflective, yet upbeat jam, flipping a sample from Willie Hutch's Brother's Gonna Work It Out as Wale toasts Obama's reelection, but expresses his doubt that the President will be willing or able to arrest the nation's continuing racial and economic stratification in his second term. He sums it up best on the bridge: “Yeah, one nation under God / Politics about the guap, I hate to break your heart.” For Freedom of Speech and much more, check out Florian when it hits the 'net December 24.
