In their recent In the Mix interview Bay Area duo Zion I said that their new music would be driven by a looser, rawer energy than some of their past work, and those qualities are instantly evident on Polarity, a stand out record from their new album Atomic Clock. Amp Live, the production half of Zion, blends together a smoothie of a beat, not only bringing together live sounding percussion, jazz horns, distorted sound effects and what just might be a xylophone on the back end, but making them all go down smoothly. On the mic side of the equation, Zion frontman Zumbi introduces the song’s polarized concept with a deep verse, followed by a strong showing from fellow Yay Area representative Locksmith (shouts to Richmond) and a spitfire flow from Macklemore (of Otherside fame). The world may indeed be made up of opposites, but this one is pretty one-sided – it’s just dope. If you’re digging Polarity, I promise you’ll be pleased with Zion I’s new, extremely precise album Atomic Clock, available everywhere good music can be found right now.
