The Effects of Acid Rap: Chance The Rapper & Lil B Made a “Based Freestyle” Album
Just last week, we brought you the news that a Chance The Rapper and Kanye West collaboration is in the works. It turns out Yeezus is not the only beneficiary of the former's acid rap, as Chance took to Instagram this past weekend, to reveal he has another collaborative album in the works... with Lil B. No joke (unless it turns out to be a joke), The BasedGod and Chance are teaming up as a super-duo of weirdness for the length of an entire project, though it's unclear when or if we might hear a finished product.
Lil B elaborated on the effort, leading us to understand this will be a "based freestyle album" and that the two recorded the project in Chicago. What exactly a "based freestyle album" will entail is anyone's guess, as past based freestyles have ranged from aggressive displays of nihilism to ethereal, introspective and emotional affairs - all walking a fine line between what can be considered music and jumbled ramblings of insanity.
Whether you're the type of person that thinks that was just a long way of saying "Lil B sucks" or someone who responds with a simple "thank you Based God," we can all agree that we have absolutely no idea how this project might sound.
Who will lead the creative direction? How much time was actually spent on this project? Will Kevin Durant ever play Lil B in 1-on-1? The world needs answers.
Both Chance and B are arguably on the Mount Rushmore of Weird Rappers at the moment, though the difference is that for the most part, hip-hop fans regard Chance's oddness as an enhancement to his art with B's more akin to a running joke. I, for one, am extremely interested to hear the final product, and whether it will end up as a serious and fully-developed work from the pair or just novelty blog fodder (in which case I took the bait).
The only certainty at this point is that fans of ironic, odd hip-hop now have an album that most likely jumps to the top of their most-anticipated lists... oh, and that there will be a Jay Electronica shout-out included, as B made mention to on Twitter today. Whether or not Jay Elect will bless the project with a verse is still unknown, and quite unlikely, though the resulting effort might just break the Internet.
