In 1987, Kendrick Lamar Duckworth is born in Compton, California. Around the same time, Barack Obama is working as a community organizer in Chicago while preparing to apply to law school. 28 years later, the two men were standing together in the White House. The world works in mysterious and awesome ways.

In December, we learned that President Obama's favorite song of 2015 was Kendrick Lamar's "What a Dollar Cost," but today it was revealed that Obama had a personal meeting with Lamar in the Oval Office in October of 2015 when Lamar was in Washington D.C. for his National Symphony Orchestra performance.

According to Obama's Senior adviser, Valerie Jarrett, Kendrick was understandably jittery about meeting with the leader of the free world, but Obama set him at ease:

“You know what the president said to him? [Because] he was a little nervous — bless his heart, he’s really a very nice young man, and the president said, ‘Can you believe that we’re both sitting in this Oval Office?’” Jarrett said.

Frankly, no, I can barely believe it. It's unbelievable that a Barack Hussein Obama II became the first black president in American history, and it's unbelievable that Kendrick Lamar, an ordinary kid from Compton whose album cover depicted his neighborhood crashing the White House and posing over the dead body of a Supreme Court Justice, got to stand in the White House and speak to Obama. I can only imagine the full extent of their conversation.

And yet it happened. Never underestimate the power of truly great music. Never.
