Wiz Khalifa on Lil Yachty: We Call It Mumble Rap, If They Want to Stay Around They’ll Evolve

By | Posted June 23, 2016
Wiz isn't the first name that comes to mind when we talk about lyricism, but he says young artists need to rap to stay in the game.

Wiz Khalifa isn't the first name that comes to mind when we talk about lyrical emcees, but even the stoner gawd thinks that the success of some newer, less lyrical artists is only temporary and if they want long lasting careers, they're going to have to figure out how to really rap.

In a new interview with Hot 97, Ebro asks Wiz what he thinks of artists like Lil Uzi Vert and Lil Yachty, who don't consider themselves rappers at all and actively avoid using the term:

"We call it mumble rap. It ain't no disrespect to the lil homies, they don't want to rap. It's cool for now, it's going to evolve. Those artists, if they want to stay around, they'll figure out the next thing to do. But right now, that's what's poppin."

Well damn Wiz, that's a very sensible and reasonable analysis of the situation.

It feels ridiculously overblown to see the rise of someone like Lil Yachty as any sort of coming of the hip-hop apocalypse, but it's also hard to see that music resulting in a sustainable career. Who knows though - it wasn't too long ago that the massive success of a rapper like Wiz Khalifa seemed unthinkable. Every generation pushes away from the one before it, and the rookies become veterans with astounding speed. Ten years from now, we might just be listening to Lil Uzi Vert talk about how these new kids need to evolve or die.
