Danny Brown, hip-hop's misfit hero, is set to release his brand new album, Atrocity Exhibition, on September 30.

Unlike his last full-length, 2013's Old, which found the Motown native expanding his sound into the electronic realm, Atrocity Exhibition will be a return to the sample-heavy template of 2011's critically-acclaimed XXX.

In a new interview with Rolling Stone, Brown revealed that the decision to lean heavily on samples cost a pretty penny. In total, sample clearance for the album cost Brown and longtime collaborator Paul White $70,000.

"I wanna make timeless stuff, so you're gonna have to spend a couple dollars," Brown told Rolling Stone. "You could have Rolex or you can have a Swatch."

According to longtime sample clearance agent Deborah Mannis-Gardner, who has worked with the likes of Drake, Eminem and Kendrick Lamar throughout her 25 year career, artists who craft a sample-heavy album are encouraged to set aside "$100,000 to $150,000 in upfront fees" for sample clearances.

Brown and White spent half that total -- and there's a chance Brown's new label, Warp Records, picked up a portion of the tab -- but they're confident the inclusion of the samples will make a huge difference when listeners hear the final product. "A lot of people cheap. And that's why their music sounds cheap," Brown explained.

In addition to footing the bill for sample clearances, Brown also ran up a tab on guest features as Ab-Soul, B-Real, Earl Sweatshirt and Kendrick Lamar were all hand picked to participate on Atrocity Exhibition.
