Things Go From Bad to Worse: Mac Miller’s “Donald Trump” is Back on the Charts
Let me preface this by saying I‘m a big fan of Mac Miller, both as an artist and human being. Since dropping Macadelic four years ago, he’s been one of my favorite rappers. I love how he’s practically a pop star but puts Jay Electronica and Lil B on his albums. Plus, he seems like a pretty nice guy.
But everyone has skeletons in their closet, and “Donald Trump,” his 2011 Platinum-selling frat rap anthem, is the rotting sack of bones in Mac’s catalog. And they’re starting to stink again.
As if today couldn’t get any worse, “Donald Trump” is back on the charts. Since Trump, the man, was announced as the next President of the United States (wake me up when it's over), Trump, the song, has re-entered the top 40 of the iTunes chart, where it currently sits at No. 30. Elsewhere, YG’s “FDT” (No. 63) and “FDT Pt. 2” (No. 136) are steadily climbing, so not everyone is out here celebrating Trump’s victory.
Scroll down further, though, and you’ll see Rae Sremmurd’s “Up Like Trump” at No. 162, so who the hell knows.
Obviously Mac Miller, like the rest of America, had no idea before recording “Donald Trump” that A) Donald Trump would run for president, B) Donald Trump would actually become president, and C) Donald Trump is such a piece of shit. For as insufferable as the song is, “Donald Trump” was just a young rapper with capitalist dreams channeling one of the country’s most famous billionaires. However, lines like, "We gon' take over the world while these haters getting mad" suddenly take on a cruel new meaning.
To his credit, Miller has distanced himself from both the song and the man in recent years. In 2013, the same year Trump threatened him with a lawsuit once the song started to blow, Mac told Complex, “When he started running for president I was like, ‘Oh, fuck — this is horrible, I have a fucking song with this dude’s name and now he’s being such a fucking douchebag.’” Then, last year, as the once-ridiculous notion of President Trump became a very real and scary possibility, Mac laid his feelings out plain and simple.
Just please don't elect this motherfucker man— Mac (@MacMiller) December 16, 2015
But that’s as weak as a Tyga diss song compared to Mac Miller’s epic takedown of Donald Trump on The Nightly Show With Larry Wilmore from earlier this year.
Sadly, Mac Miller’s inspiring speech wasn’t enough to prevent the Trumpocalypse from happening. Even a nice little check from iTunes probably won’t ease the pain. But you have to ask yourself: who is playing (and, more importantly, buying) “Donald Trump” right now? Is it corny Trump supporters looking for an obnoxious victory anthem? Or is it Democrat voters mentally and physically preparing themselves for four years of torture?
Either way, I fucking hate Donald Trump — the song and the man.
