Drake is back with what definitely should have been a single from his last project.

“Takin’ summer off, ’cause they tell me I need recovery / Maybe gettin’ back to my regular life will humble me / I’ll be back in 2018 to give you the summary” — "Do Not Disturb"

Despite telling us he’d be gone 'til November next Summer at the end of More Life, Drake has returned with a new song called “Signs.” Produced by his right-hand man, Noah “40” Shebib, the track was premiered during Louis Vuitton’s 2018 Spring/Summer runway show in Paris earlier today, which rap bloggers like myself were forced to livestream. (The song appears at the 6:10 mark.)

I couldn’t tell you much about Louis Vuitton’s latest collection other than that there were about 25 skinny young men parading around in clothes than can only be described as if Hunter S. Thompson filmed Fear & Loathing in 1930s Europe where it rained all the time. When the audience (which included Virgil Abloh and the reprehensible Ian Connor) stood to applaud, it only confirmed the fact I know fuck all about high fashion.

But what I can tell you is that Drake’s new song is a banger. Inspired, he says, by Louis Vuitton’s curious new collection, “Signs” is an automatic song-of-the-summer contender that Aubrey may or may not have accidentally left on the More Life cutting room floor. Featuring a clanking drum riddim straight from the Caribbean, “Signs” feels like “Passionfruit” with a double shot of vodka, about five of which will have you ocean deep in both your feelings and thoughts.

“Signs” is less about soundtracking that no-strings-attached summer fling, though, and more about the caution required to prevent your heart getting broken at the end of the vacation. Drake finds it almost impossible to say no to a girl who drinks like a Bajan, dances like a Trini and, above all, says please, but he also knows he “needs to take it easy, easy, easy, easy.” That includes sage advice like, "you can’t drink all day if you don’t start in the morning."

Maybe Drake, now 30 years old, is changing his ways. Or maybe he just wants to enjoy his summer off without ruining it. Either way, “Signs” is a summer smash.
