Heat Check: How Do You Feel About Eminem’s “Guts Over Fear”

YouTube ads are the worst. I mean, I know a quick five second video is a small price to pay to watch a video for a rap song and, of course, adorable puppies, but it still makes my blood boil. Normally I skip them as soon as humanly possible, but a few months ago one caught my eye ear. It wasn't so much the explosions in the trailer for the Denzel Washington flick The Equalizer as it was the song that played in the background.

Hearing Eminem in a commercial is no surprise at this point, but this was a song I couldn't place. It turned out the track was an unreleased, Sia-assisted single entitled "Guts Over Fear."

Well...unreleased until now.

I've been waiting three months for this record to drop and the time has finally come: "Guts Over Fear," the first single off Em's forthcoming album, Shady XV, is here! A new Em song and a new Em album? What could be better? So now that we can finally get to listen without hearing Denzel blabber, was "Guts Over Fear" worth the wait?

You know what's crazy about Eminem? No matter what he does, no matter how "radio ready" his song may be, he's still one of the few emcees that will make me drop everything I'm doing and just listen. I mean it's 11:30PM on a Sunday night, and I'm writing about his work. Very few artists have that power. At this point in Eminem's career, nothing he can do will really shock me or give me that "woah" feeling I used to get from him on the regular. Still, the man knows how to make a god damn rap song.

While it doesn't get my hair standing on edge, "Guts Over Fear" is still a solid effort; it's definitely going in rotation, especially in my workout playlist. For me at least, Em doesn't possess the same magic he once performed, but hearing him rap is still a treat. Despite all the changes to his flow, he still remains passionate and fluid and it all still works. Also, it's really interesting hearing him rap about the end (so to speak).  I can't embrace the underdog Eminem anymore - he's just too popular - but that last verse is pretty interesting. This will no doubt get compared to certified smash hit "Monster," it certainly has a similar formula, but it feels less poppy and I definitely dig this more than the Rihanna-assisted record.

Also, a million gazillion points to Sia. She fucking kills it on this record. Between "Chandelier" and now "Guts Over Fear" (which is bound to be a radio smash) she is having one hell of a breakout year. So to answer the question, yes it was worth the wait, and yes it is Hotter Than Rick Ross in a Volcano.

What you got?
