Mullage Jump “In The Mix” [DJBooth Interview Exclusive]

New York, NY -- This past Tuesday, we jumped "In The Mix" with Donnis, a Southern emcee who recently dropped his Diary of an Atlanta Brave mixtape. In the ninth installment of our Booth-exclusive interview series, we're giving readers an up-close and personal look at Mullage, the up-and-coming duo who introduced themselves to the Booth with T-Pain-assisted debut single "Trick'n."

Both born and raised in Atlanta, singer/rappers B Town (Braelon McMullen) and B Boi (Marquez Hutchinson) were introduced by a mutual friend while while serving in the U.S. Navy. After collaborating intermittently (notably earning first prize for performing "The La La Song" in a local talent competition), the twosome found their big break in "I Gotta Get Her." Recorded for B Boi's solo LP, the record attracted label attention and ultimately led to a deal with Jive Records. Now, fueled by the steadily inceasing success of "Trick'n," Mullage are busily working on their collective major-label-debut, The Element of Versatility.

In this exclusive, five-question interview, Mullage discuss the genre-fusing musical approach that will ensure their forthcoming full-length lives up to its title, the artists who have helped to inspire their unique sound, and how the duo's shared military background has affected their musical career.

Your Jive Records debut album is entitled, The Element Of Versatility.  What steps were taken during the recording process to ensure that this project lives up to its title?

B Town: The incorporation of a live band was key. [Also] making sure that our vocal training was up to par with the lyricism.  It takes time to perfect this craft.

B-Boi: A lot of extra time was put into who we worked with, producer wise, to help us incorporate all the different genres in our music, so that we captured the right sound.

Since the lines between Hip Hop and R&B have become very blurred, is there a particular name or style that best describes the genre of music that Mullage makes?

B Town: We like to call our sound 'urban pop,' but bottom line - its really just our own style.

When asked, L.A. Reid described Mullage as “a combination of Outkast meets The Dream.” Do you agree with his complementary assessment?

B Boi: I mean, if you were comparing sounds than I would have to say "yes."  We put a lot of thought into the creation of our material, similar to Outkast, so its definitely a fair comparison.

B Town: I definitely agree with that!

Describe the impact, if any, that your time served in the U.S. Navy has had on the start of your collective recording career?

B Town: It had a big impact, due to the fact that it taught us how to persevere. I mean, we learned that everything does not turn out the way you want it to, but you [just] have to keep goin’ and make it through.

In your "Trick'n" feature at DJBooth.net, it was suggested that people call their state legislators and suggest that the slogan, “It ain’t Trickn if you got it.” be prominently displayed on all U.S. currency.  Any thoughts on this potentially history-changing idea?

B Boi: [laughs] Wow! Man, I’m all for that! If we could make that happen, we would be some rich guys!

B Town: [laughs] Um, while its a little far fetched... as long as we got our due, I'm all for it.
