Re-Produced Profile: Numonics [DJBooth Interview Exclusive]

Download DJBooth's new App, The PLUG On October 31, The DJBooth will release the latest installment of Re-Produced, an exclusive EP series in which three hand-picked producers put their own spin on a record by a reader-approved artist. Number three in the series will be based around "We Up," a record off Philly rhymesayer Freeway's Freedom of Speech LP. In anticipation of the project's arrival, we're making sure each of the participating beatsmiths has been properly introduced to our readership with a series of exclusive producer profiles.

In the first of three profiles, we chop it up with South Florida beatsmith Numonics, whose remix of the record can be previewed here.

Years Producing: 10 years.

What tools and/or production software do you use?

I use Logic, Philharmonik, Camel Audio Alchemy, Epiphone Les Paul, Fender Squire Bass, Apogee One Preamp, Kontakt, Reason, Akai MPD and some Midi keyboard, whose brand manufacturer I cannot remember [laughs].

Head phones or monitors?

Monitors all day! I always hate to have to use headphones, but it's a must at times. It's definitely a personal thing as I know many people who prefer headphones. I need to hear the track loud on quality speakers.

What production work are you most proud of thus far in your career?

My album REBELUTIONARY with REKS. We received a XL in XXL and the reviews overall have been very positive. It's the first album I've done that had a central theme to it and I'm proud that it's politically motivated. It's also very moving to me as I was able to pay homage to Fred Hampton as I feel his story is so important. He is a true American freedom fighter and responsible for educational programs and free breakfast programs with his work with the Black Panther Party. He was murdered in his home while he slept with his pregnant wife by the FBI in conjunction with the Chicago Police Department, who invaded his home without a warrant. His story deserves to be told, to be remembered and most importantly to teach.

Describe the process by which you "Re-Produced" Freeway's "We Up" record.

I wanted to go a different route with the song as the original is very synth heavy. I came up with a simple bass/guitar riff and combined it with a re-programmed drum break. I really just honed in on the vibe of that particular riff and I think it blended together quite nice with Free's lyrics.

What should readers expect from you in the coming months?

I have new albums with Co$$, J NiCS, Koncept, J57, Dynas, Gotham Green, George Young, Sin, LMS, Saheed and a few instrumental projects.
