Back in February, 50 Cent kicked off his independent hustle with The Funeral, a buzz single off his fifth full-length. The record earned rave reviews from listeners in the Booth, who regarded its hard-hitting bars and dark sound as refreshing change of pace from the status quo. If you were feeling that cut, you’ll be happy to hear that newly-released follow-up Hold On follows in its predecessor’s effortlessly gully footsteps. Frank Dukes replaces Jake One as producer, but establishes a similar mood behind the boards, layering strings and soulful vocal harmonies over a slow-rolling rhythm section. Over that understated backdrop, Fitty paints a laid-back lyrical portrait of his hustle, outlining his business philosophy with deadpan panache. He caps the record off with a reference to his longtime feud with incarcerated rap businessman Jimmy Henchman: “Now Jimmy got life, gonna smack him again.Eif Rivera‘s stylish visuals round out the package. Animal Ambition is scheduled to hit record stores and online retailers June 3. In the meantime, keep it locked for the latest singles.
