Earlier this week, 50 Cent fans received a disappointing piece of news: the rapper’s fifth studio album, Street King Immortal, had been pushed back indefinitely. But fear not—if you’ve been fiending for new material from the G-Unit capo, a listen to our latest Throwback Thursday selection will help ease the pain. (Either that, or it’ll make you miss his heyday even more.) The lead single off 2003 studio debut Get Rich or Die Tryin’, In da Club instantly cemented 50 as one of the rap game’s foremost hitmakers, reaching #1 on the Hot 100 and breaking a Billboard record to become the “most-listened-to” song in radio history. And its influence can’t be overstated; both Dr. Dre‘s minimalist beat and Curtis Jackson’s caked-up verses (featuring the now-classic “It’s your birthday,” line) became the objects of constant imitation in subsequent years, though none quite managed to match the original’s appeal.
