For many, the word “summer” evokes pleasant images of bright sunshine, long, lazy days and outings to the beach. In neighborhoods plagued by gun violence, however, the correlation between rising temperatures and increased crime rates make the season more bitter than sweet. On new single Summertime Sadness, making its world premiere in The DJBooth, the Bay Area spitter who brought us Double Dose harks back to the fateful Fourth of July evening when a stray bullet left his homegirl’s father paralyzed from the waist down. Ryan Hemsworth backs the rhymesayer’s poignant narrative bars with a sample from Lana Del Rey‘s record of the same title. Sadness is currently unattached to any forthcoming project, but Booth readers will be the first to know if and when that changes.
