Alex Isley - Retro-Wilhelm

Album:
None

It’s been a hot minute since last we heard from Alex Isley, daughter of famed soul man Ernie Isley; Set in Stone hit the Booth way back in May of 2012. On her long-awaited comeback feature, the soul songstress covers not one but two jams by electronic musician James Blake, who also happens to come from a musical family. Retro-Wilhelm is an innovative mash-up of Blake’s Retrograde and The Wilhelm Scream, the latter of which drew heavily from his father, James Litherland’s 2006 record, Where to Turn. And in case you’re not already suffering from information overload, “the Wilhelm Scream” is the nickname for a stock scream used in more than 200 movies, including all of the Star Wars films. None of that knowledge, however, is necessary to appreciate Alex Isley’s stunning vocal performance, which comes backed by her own dreamy, synth-driven production. Retro-Wilheim is just a loosie but, when Isley reveals what she’s got planned for 2014, rest assured y’all will be the first to know.
