Astro - New New York

The Mentalist PRODUCERS

This Tuesday, the authorities whitewashed 5 Pointz, a building in Queens whose walls were home to tags dating back to the 1990s. And that’s just the beginning of the changes going down in NYC. On a new promo single, his first feature since parting ways with Epic Records, Astro voices his dissatisfaction with the New New York. In addition to bemoaning the corporatization of Brooklyn and the dwindling number of real G’s, he takes aim at the artists who currently rule the airwaves: “This music used to be an anthem, now it’s a bunch of rappers throwin’ temper tantrums… this ain’t music G, this is coonery.” The teenage mic-murderer may want to take his art form back to ‘92, but The Mentalist PRODUCERS keep things fresh and contemporary behind the boards, mixing hazy synths and trap hi-hats with melancholy piano loops. This joint isn’t attached to a larger set, but we’ll keep you posted on Astro’s plans as further details emerge. Additionally, watch for the artist to contribute to the newly-relaunched DJBooth Freestyle Series in the near future.
