I know what you’re thinking: with his refined style and considerable cash reserves, Bruno Mars doesn’t seem like the kind of guy you’d catch drinking bootleg liquor distilled in some dude’s bathtub. Did he miss the memo about the repeal of Prohibition? While I was slightly disappointed to find new single Moonshine wasn’t about, well, moonshine, the feeling quickly passed when I listened to the record, which finds him departing from his usual, theatrically heartbroken fare in favor of a lightly funky, ‘80s-informed style. I have to admit, I never detected a strong MJ influence in Mars’ vocals before, but here, over Jeff Bhasker and Nicky Romero‘s throwback grooves, the linkage could hardly be more apparent. Are you feeling this nostalgia-laden musical detour? If so, you can cop the record now on iTunes,—or wait till December 11, when Unorthodox Jukebox hits record stores and online retailers via Atlantic.
