One of my favorite lines from J.Cole is, “Cause I’m finna drop knowledge like a Five Percenter.” Well, Cole might want to change the “Five Percenter” part to “Live Percenters,” because the hip-hop quartet drop some serious knowledge on their Booth debut, Science of the City. The group’s resident beatsmith, Dukes Go Up, sets the mood with an intricate beat boasting a funky bassline littered with bells and chimes. While there are plenty of sounds, Dukes weaves them together perfectly so that the overall effect isn’t overwhelming. Atop the sonorous beat, I-be4Evr, Physical Graffiti and Mellow Drum Addict share the mic, showcasing seasoned flows as they deliver their edifying bars. Science of the City will be found on the group’s upcoming LP, The Corners Involved, due out next month.
