Raekwon - Son of Sam

Posted 3 years ago
Producer:
Frank G. & RoadsArt
Album:
Fly International Luxurious Art

When it comes to instrumentals, Raekwon is a serial murderer. Thus, it’s appropriate, if slightly morbid, that the Wu Tang lyricist’s latest record (a potential inclusion on his next full-length) finds him drawing inspiration from Son of Sam, the killer who terrorized New York City between 1976 and ‘77. For his latest victim, the Chef has selected one of the most oft-used samples in hip-hop history; the piano-laced break from Melvin Bliss’ Synthetic Substitution, as flipped by co-producers Frank G. and RoadsArt, backs the rhymesayer as he reminds us why he’s considered one of hip-hop’s most gifted storytellers, delivering verses peppered with vivid and surprising details (“Gangsters, buffalos, flexing in bear hats / We call ‘em Russians, New Yorkers’ll wear that.”). Should someone take this beat and make a “Rest in Peace” shirt of it? I think I know the answer but, as always, that’s for y’all to decide. Whatever your take, you can keep it locked to our pages for all the latest on Fly International Luxurious Art, due out later this year.
