Back in 1993, three young residents of Detroit’s Conant Gardens neighborhood came together to form Slum Village, a trio which would go on to shape the Motown underground scene. Two decades later, despite creative differences, lineup changes and the tragic deaths of two founding members, the group are still going strong. On Forever, a freshly-minted street single off their seventh studio album, they take some time out to reflect on the past. Backed by Young RJ‘s subdued keyboard-percussion boardwork, rhymesayers T3 and Illa J revisit the good times, as well as reflecting on what might have been. Evolution, Slum Village’s first LP since 2010’s Villa Manifesto, is scheduled to drop in June. In the meantime, fans can still cop their latest mixtape, Dirty Slums 2, for free in The DJBooth.
