Soul Like Khan

In the (apparently awful) sequel to Disney classic The Mighty Ducks, the eponymous team defeats Iceland with the help of a technique called the Knuckle Puck. What does that have to do with Soul Khan‘s latest feature, a standout track off his latest street album? Beats me – I think it’s just a reflection of the Boston native’s taste for so-bad-it’s-good pop-culture epherema (See also Thunder in Paradise, named after the short-lived Hulk Hogan vehicle). Unlike its cinematic inspiration, this cut is quality through and through, with J57 cooking up a smooth instrumental backdrop (sampled from ‘70s funk group War’s Nappy Head) for the bruising bars of Khan and a few talented cohorts; fellow Brown-Bag All-Star Koncept, Queens repper Homeboy Sandman and Jersey native 8thW1 each drop a punchline-packed guest verse leading up to the headliner’s climactic closer. The hip-hop equivalent of a game-winning goal (to roll with the hockey analogy), Knuckle Puck is just the beginning of the dopeness to be found on the artist’s Soul Like Khan mixtape, available now online.
