Track: The Niger Delta
Producer: BroadNMarket
Album: Untitled (TBD)

There are days when Chuck D‘s famous statement that rap is “the black CNN” seems a little over-generous (Since when is “I’m fly” headline news?), but this is not one of them. In fact, I’d venture a guess that if you were to spend the next 24 hours glued to your cable news network of choice, you’d hear few stories as eye-opening as Soulbrotha‘s latest single, on which the Houston native calls attention to the social unrest and environmental devastation that plague The Niger Delta. Making its world premiere right here in the Booth, this joint finds producer BroadNMarket serving up a tunefully understated blend of soul samples and midtempo percussion as the emcee lyrically depicts a region in crisis, describing how amoral multinationals allowed free rein by a corrupt and ineffectual government, destroyed the ecosystem and afflicted locals with horrific physical ailments. It’s impossible to encapsulate such a complex struggle in a three-minute rap song but, as the artist helpfully notes, “Google is your friend.” Soulbrotha’s forthcoming LP has yet to receive a title or release date, but fans can, as always, keep it locked for the latest.
