When a working relationship as close, and as long-running as that of Natalie Stewart and Marsha Ambrosius is dissolved, the separation is rarely painless—and, sure enough, neo-soul duo Floetry’s split nearly six years ago left some lingering issues. Frustrated with her ex-partner’s business decisions and piqued by some of Ambrosius’ own remarks, The Floacist has decided to break her silence on the issues between them—and, fortunately, she’s elected to do so in a musical form that even the drama-averse will be able to appreciate. On Soul, producer Nolan Weekes creates a brisk, lightly funky instrumental to back the singer as she offers an alternate perspective on the group’s disintegration, chalking it up to Ambrosious’ insistence on taking a more commercial path rather than staying true to the sound they’d forged together. Whatever your opinion on the matter, you can expect more soulfully refreshing new material on The Floacist Presents: Floetry Rebirth (Yes, that title is a response to Marsha’s Neo-Soul Is Dead mixtape), scheduled for release November 13, via Shanachie.
