I consider myself a pretty clear-thinking person, my Twitter handle is RefinedHype for a reason. Nothing drives me crazier than bullshit inflated by hype, but the day I stop getting irrationally excited about music every so often is the day I retire, and I'm irrationally excited about Chance the Rapper's upcoming Chance 3 album.
I long ago learned to never rely on album release dates, but over the last month, I've been following every hint and rumor of Chance 3's arrival with the intensity of a lion spotting a sick gazelle. I've kind of lost my shit.
Or, alternately, given that Chance has already delivered two of my favorite albums of the past few years in 10 Day and Acid Rap, three if you include his work on Surf, it's completely rational to expect his next album to shake the Earth again. And in a new Complex interview, which also put him in conversation with Hamilton creator Lin Manuel Miranda, Chance didn't hesitate to feed the flames.
Yeah. This stuff is way better than Surf. I’ll say that on record. Donnie [Trumpet] is awesome, and the project was awesome, but this is all of us focusing our efforts into some very hip-hop and very dance-y shit, and it feels good. So I’m excited about that." —Complex interview
Every rapper says their new album is their best yet—the line I hear all the time is "It's like a movie"—but Chance isn't one to be falsely humble. Throwing me a line like that is like throwing Rick Ross a bucket of lemon pepper wings, there's just no way I'm not eating it up. In order of greatness I've got Chance's catalog at Acid Rap, then Surf, then 10 Day, and to know it's going to top Surf, and I'm daring to hope it can equal if not surpass Acid Rap, has me on the verge of losing my mind.
