Cerwin Vega P1800SX Powered 18-inch Subwoofer Review Summary:

The Cerwin Vega brand has been around for a very long time. My very first set of DJ speakers were a retired pair of Cerwin Vega 12-inch passive speakers in wood cabinets from my father’s old stereo system from back in the early 80’s. I’ve used many different CV speaker variants throughout the years, so I already know what to expect from this professional speaker brand as a whole. The newest edition to the CV professional audio speaker lineup is the P-series powered & portable speakers that safely live up to the Cerwin Vega philosophies of high quality sound and durability. The Cerwin Vega P-series speakers are available in a 15-inch, active 2-way speaker setup (P1500X) and a powered subwoofer version in the 18-inch configuration (P1800SX). In this review we will focus on the P1800SX subwoofer model as the review of the P1500X was completed yesterday morning and can be found here.

The first impression of the P1800SX Cerwin Vega subwoofer is very good as the subwoofer has a solid 18mm plywood construction with a very nice black textured/protective finish to protect it against bumps and scrapes during transport. All of the corners and edges are rounded off so that they don’t get caught on anything. The weight of the subwoofer is about 84lbs. The front of the cabinet has a sturdy black grill that protects the woofer from any accidental impacts. The bottom portion of the cabinet is cut away to allow for plenty of space for the bass to push the air out towards the front of the subwoofer enclosure. The cabinet also has a pair of rubber-coated heavy-duty handles on the sides for easy transport. There is a 35mm pole mount on the top to mount a full-range speaker on top using a standard speaker pole. The bottom of the P1800X features low-profile rubber feet and there are optional heavy-duty steel wheels that come in the box for those who want to mount them for DJ’s who need to move them around a lot.

The P1800SX subwoofer is powered by a 2000-watt Class-D lightweight (fan-cooled) internal amplifier which connects to a standard power outlet with the included IEC power cable.. The speaker runs at about 725-watts continuously which powers the 18-inch subwoofer. The bass performance on this subwoofer was one of the best I’ve ever used in this small style form-factor. The bass was really clear and deep and it didn’t vibrate excessively when super-deep bass audio is present. The sound coming out of the woofer is also highly-responsive and accurate. Just as with the P1500X powered 15-inch full-range speakers, we never had any issues with popping, hissing, excessive interference, or humming during our two hour stress test of the P1800SX. We even cranked the volume up to very high levels and the subwoofer never hit the limiter or cut out on us. The P1800SX reminds me of a small version of the Cerwin Vega Earthquake subwoofers that were offered a long time ago and are still featured in lots of club installations today. This is high quality and top-performance at its best.

The CV P1800SX has a good range of input and output options found on the back of the powered sub. There are two XLR/quarter-inch combo inputs and there are (2) XLR Outputs to connect the subwoofer to the inputs of another amp (for passive speakers) or directly to the other active speakers in the setup. There is also another Link output that can be used as well. There are also on/off switches to change the sound characteristics of the P1800SX speaker which are Polarity Reverse (to change the sound), Vega Bass Boost (to add an extra layer of bass to the output), High Pass Filter (to only allow the higher frequencies to pass through the outputs), and the Front Limiter Light (to let the user know when the speaker is clipping or “in the red”). Last but not least, there is a Main volume control knob for the whole speaker’s overall volume output and Indicators for Signal/Clip, Power, Limiter, and Protect.

Conclusion / Recommended For

In conclusion, The Cerwin Vega P-Series lineup is a truly professional and high-quality powered speaker range that is perfect for permanent club and pro-audio setups or for the mobile DJ who wants the best performance from a speaker system. The price of the P1800SX subwoofer is a bit high compared to other subwoofers on the market (at $1000 each) but the performance is on-par with the price meaning you get what you pay for. The P1800SX has incredibly deep bass response and tight accuracy for good bass reproduction. The overall construction is solid and the high-powered 725-Watt internal amplifier can bump for hours and hours without any degradation or wavering throughout the performance. Anyone looking for a new subwoofer to complete their high-quality and professional setup should take a long and hard look at the Cerwin Vega P1800SX powered subwoofer.
