Cassie - King of Hearts (Kanye West Remix)

Kanye West
Untitled (TBD)

When Cassie first stepped into the Booth with King of Hearts back in mid-February, the single was met with widespread ambivalence from readers. Some seemed to think that the joint’s carefree, body-moving vibes were just what the doctor ordered, others panned the record for its “generic” sound. If there’s one individual who can rock a club dancefloor while maintaining a style unmistakably his own, however, Kanye West is he. Thus, the First Lady of Bad Boy has enlisted Yeezy to put his stamp on the bubblegum-pop banger’s official remix. The beatsmith wields his figurative scalpel with a light touch, keeping what worked about J2‘s original beat—the delayed synth hooks, the tension-ratcheting handclaps, the syncopated percussion rhythm—while freshening up the arrangement with some distinctive touches of his own: a more dense synth arrangement and, most notably, a generous helping of the chopped and tweaked vocal samples that were a staple of his MBDTF-era sound. So, has Kanye succeeded in turning King of Hearts from an average dancefloor scorcher into a bona fide hit? Debate away, and keep it locked for the latest on Cassie’s sophomore set, which has yet to receive a title or drop date.
