Frank Ocean - Sweet Life

Posted 4 years ago
Producer:
Pharrell Williams
Album:

This week Frank Ocean became perhaps the most high-profile openly gay artist in R&B, and a lot of people have wondered how the announcement will affect Ocean’s career. But on DJBooth’s pages all we care about is the music, and with new release Sweet Life, Ocean has once again proven that he can make some damn good music. Sweet Life is a more traditionally structured R&B song than Frank’s previous effort Pyramids; I’m sure I won’t be the only one surprised to learn that the usually electronically driven Pharrell was responsible for the track’s organic, jazzy and live instrument driven sound. Vocally, Ocean is appropriately sweet, softly painting a picture of a life lived in the “black Beverly Hills” surrounded by all the luxuries a person could ask for. Just in time for the weekend, expect to hear this one played at pool side barbecues nationwide. It’s sounding like we’re right to expect much more groundbreaking music with the release of Ocean’s Def Jam debut album, Channel Orange, due out July 17.
