Jarell Perry - Blow (Beyoncé Cover)
Late last month, Jarell Perry impressed Boothgoers with a soulful reimagining of Own It, a cut of Drake‘s 2013 Nothing Was the Same LP. Now, the indie crooner has put his stamp on a sensual selection off Beyoncé‘s recent self-titled full-length. In its original form, Blow detailed the artist’s thoughts as she received oral pleasure from her man. Here, of course, the roles are reversed. The gender-flipped version of the cut works surprisingly well, although Perry had to omit the lyrics on the hook. (Guess “Can you eat my skittles?” doesn’t sound quite so natural coming from a dude.) As usual, HSVN mans the mixing boards, crafting a more understated, atmospheric synth arrangment to replace Bey and Pharrell‘s upbeat, disco-infused instrumental. Are Perry and his behind-the-boards partner two for two on the cover tip? Debate away! Those feeling it can hear more (original) material from the artist on his White EP, out now on iTunes.
