January 31, 2011, was a Monday like any other: the sun rose in the east, students got up and went to school, workers showed up for their jobs, Justin Garner stepped into the Booth with a fresh solo feature... Little did we know, however, that that would be the last we saw of the unsigned R&B singer for nine whole months. If you have been crying yourself to sleep every night, clutching a framed photo of the singer (not that I’ve, uh, been doing that), then it may be some consolation to hear that he’s felt the same way; Garner’s first feature since the top of the year is an unreleased cover of I Miss You, the heartbroken standout cut off Beyoncé‘s 4 LP. Shea Taylor and Frank Ocean‘s original instrumental gets a subtle facelift courtesy of Shaun Andrew; over his The Collective crewmate’s ethereal synth voices and fortified rhythm section, Garner showcases his vocal chops and his skill at emoting as he delivers Bey’s poignant verses. Time for the big question: does this cover do justice to the original? And, just for kicks, how does it stack up against fellow up-and-comer Eric Bellinger‘s previously-featured rendition?
