It’s been roughly six months since Desiigner‘s “Panda” catapulted into the collective hip-hop consciousness through a sample on “Father Stretch My Hands Pt. 2” from Kanye West’s The Life Of Pablo album. “Panda” itself then exploded all the way to a number one hit, culminating in Def Jam’s recent announcement that the song had been certified triple Platinum.

Replicating the success of “Panda” has proven to be difficult, however, as Desiigner’s latest single, “Tiimmy Turner,” is rising slowly, up only one position week-over-week and currently sitting at #37 after four weeks on the Billboard Hot 100. While “Tiimmy Turner” is arguably a much more unique record, it hasn’t turned into the absolute wildfire that “Panda” was and continues to be (it’s still a top 20 hit, after all).
Granted, the single doesn’t have the good fortune of being included as part of a major release from Kanye West to launch it into the stratosphere, but coupled with the mixed-at-best reception of Desiigner’s first official project New English, “Tiimmy Turner” will need to peak much higher than #37 for the ‘Desiigner is flash in the pan’ claims to cease.
Desiigner’s presence in the rap game is still fairly new, and with only a single mixtape under his belt we’re not jumping to conclusions just yet, but if the temperate success of “Tiimmy Turner” is any indication, history will remain undefeated.
